Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns are set to continue their Betway Premiership title race on Wednesday 4 March when they face Polokwane City and Golden Arrows respectively.

The teams are tied at the top of the Premiership standings with 41 points (from 18 matches) apiece. The Buccaneers hold first place on the strength of a better goal difference (+22 to +21) and returned to winning form in spectacular style this past Saturday by thrashing arch rivals Kaizer Chiefs 3-0 away from home in the Soweto derby.

“I am proud of [the players]. We have to build on that kind of performance. So, it was a reference performance. So, we have to build on that for the rest of the season,” said Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou.

That victory piled the pressure on the Brazilians, but they responded with an emphatic 3-1 triumph over Sekhukhune United on Sunday to keep the race thrillingly tight.

Iqraam Rayners scored a brace of goals against Sekhukhune, and coach Miguel Cardoso has explained that he has faith in the striker – as well as new addition Monnapule Saleng.

“Iqraam had a not so good moment, we all know, he knows, but he knows we trust and trust is shown in the right moment,” explained Cardoso. “So, instead we stick together, we knew the right moment would appear and he had to be ready. I’m so happy for the team and him also, for Saleng that comes in such a difficult moment and for everybody of course.”

Arrows could prove a tricky opponent for Sundowns, having beaten the Brazilians when the teams last met (1-0 in September 2025), as well as boasting a current five-game unbeaten streak across all competitions.

Wednesday will also feature AmaZulu hosting Magesi FC, Durban City looking to keep up their fine debut season with a win at home to Sekhukhune United, and a key clash between Chippa United and Marumo Gallants – two teams trying to distance themselves from the relegation zone.
