With the Betway Premiership swiftly heading toward a close, Mamelodi Sundowns will face the tough task of fending off Kaizer Chiefs in their next league assignment as they continue their run at the top.

Sitting on 64 points from 27 matches in the league, Sundowns’ recent run of form has done them well in their bid to retain the Betway Premiership trophy.

A resounding 3-0 win against Polokwane City last time out saw the Brazilians open up a five point gap over second-placed Orlando Pirates, who have a game in hand. In addition to their victory, Pirates could only manage a 1-1 draw against Kaizer Chiefs in their last league outing.

Nonetheless, Sundowns will go into their next tie with a run of three wins and two draws in their last five while Amakhosi recorded two victories, two stalemates and one defeat in the same number of games.

Chiefs currently sit in third position; five points clear of AmaZulu as they intend on qualifying for the CAF Confederations Cup.

However, the Soweto giants will eye a return to the winning column this week after noting a 2-0 loss against Siwelele during Matchday 26. As for their form sheet, Chiefs now find themselves without victory in three league outings.

With Sundowns aiming to bag their ninth league title in succession, Miguel Cardoso expects Chiefs to be full of vigor while he reiterated the need to gather as many points as possible.

It’s quite a big match in South Africa so we have to go for it and try to make it as best as we can so that we can get points. We need points to proceed so the objective is the same,” he added.

We don’t have a lot of time. We have two days and then we are playing again. As you can imagine, the recovery process for us is the most important.

They haven’t played for a very long time. What that means is that they will come with full energy but we will also come with full energy that’s for sure.”

Mamelodi Sundowns wins: 30

Kaizer Chiefs wins: 29
