Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns will continue their battle for Betway Premiership supremacy, while four clubs are in the mix for third place.

Orlando Pirates could find themselves knocked off the summit by the time they face Golden Arrows at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Tuesday, April 7.

The Buccaneers thrashed TS Galaxy 6-0 on March 22 to go one point clear of Mamelodi Sundowns at the top of the table, having only managed a 1-1 draw against Siwelele the previous weekend.

However, the Brazilians have a chance to reclaim top spot when they take on Chippa United on Friday, April 3 which would put both title rivals on 22 games played ahead of the following week’s fixtures.

Abafana Bes’thende held onto eighth spot after edging Sekhukhune United 1-0 on March 22 to make it two wins from their last three outings. They are level with Stellenbosch (9th) on 28 points and trail Polokwane City (7th) by one, having played one game more.

Mamelodi Sundowns are the in-form team in the league after winning their last eight matches on the spin and they will be looking to do the league double over Durban City at Chatsworth Stadium on Tuesday, April 7.

Miguel Cardoso’s side maintained their remarkable form with a 3-1 victory over Marumo Gallants on March 17 to stay within touching distance of Pirates.

But Cardoso insists that will mean nothing if Bafana Ba Style don’t focus on the match to come, stating that feeling comfortable is not a good space to be in.

“If we feel it’s comfortable, we are going to step in false for sure,” he said. “If we think whatever we did will speak for us, it’s wrong. What is going to speak for us is what we are going to do in the next match for sure. So, we need to focus on it.”

The Citizens have impressed under Pitso Dladla, winning three of their five league fixtures since he replaced Sinethemba Badela at the helm in February. A 1-0 success against Richard Bay on March 22 took them within a point of Kaizer Chiefs (4th) in fifth position albeit having played two games more.

Kaizer Chiefs will attempt to ramp up the pressure on AmaZulu when they take on Orbit College at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Monday, April 6.

Amakhosi got their top-three challenge back on track with successive wins against Durban City (1-0) and Magesi (2-0) to stay within a point of AmaZulu (3rd), having lost their previous three games on the spin.

The Mswenko Boyz have been dragged into a relegation scrap after picking up just five points in the new year and they occupy 15th place following back-to-back defeats against Sundowns (2-0) and Siwelele (1-0),

Meanwhile, Stellenbosch will be hoping to continue their unbeaten start under Gavin Hunt in the league when they visit Richards Bay on Tuesday, April 7.

The Maroons have won four of their eight matches since Hunt took over the reins from Steve Barker in January, collecting 16 points in the process. A 2-1 triumph over Chippa United on March 21 took them to the brink of the top eight and they are tied with Arrows on 28 points.

Hunt insists he won’t let Thabo Moloisane’s contract situation distract performances after making it clear to the defender that he must give his all or move on.

“I know a lot of coaches do it differently. But for me, it’s simple – you either give everything here or you move on,” he said. “I said to him and another player, ‘Give me your all, otherwise you go’.”

The Natal Rich Boyz aren’t by any means safe yet after struggling for results this year, winning just one of their eight games. A 1-0 reverse to Durban City on March 22 was their third straight defeat and left them five points above the bottom two in 12th spot.

Elsewhere, AmaZulu (3rd) host Sekhukhune United (6th) at the Princess Magogo Stadium, Chippa United (13th) welcome Siwelele (10th) to the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, TS Galaxy (11th) entertain Polokwane City (7th) at the Solomon Mahlangu Stadium and Magesi (16th) lock horns with Marumo Gallants (14th) at the Seshego Stadium.
