After a frustrating result in the CAF Confederations Cup this past weekend, Stellenbosch FC will now shift their attention to the Betway Premiership in a clash with Polokwane City FC at the Athlone Stadium on Wednesday.
Stellenbosch fulfilled their latest CAF Confederations Cup assignment with a 1-1 draw alongside Singida Black Stars at the Liti Stadium on Sunday. In turn, the Cape Winelands side maintained their spot at the top of Group C with four points in two matches played so far.
Domestically, Stellenbosch are dangling in the wrong half of the Betway Premiership table, as they head into their next game in 14th place with 12 points after 13 games played.
Stellies jotted down a 2-1 win against Orbit College last time out, a result that took their run of form to two victories, two losses and one draw in their last five league matches.
Rise and Shine on the other hand are in seventh spot, after accumulating 20 points from 13 games.
Polokwane City are on a three-match unbeaten run in the Betway Premiership and will enter their next fixture on the back of a 0-0 stalemate with TS Galaxy last Saturday.
Speaking after his side’s draw with Singida Black Stars, Stellies’ coach Steve Barker expressed his discontent with some of the refereeing decisions during the match, while he also mentioned that the Western Cape team could have bagged maximum points on the day.
“I’m very disappointed in the officiating, but it is what it is. Players gave a good account of themselves,” Barker said.
“We had good structure, we defended well, we had opportunities on transitions. On half-time, that was the message, I knew, just one opportunity to get in behind them – we would get something which we did.
“And obviously, after that, we had to manage the game. Instead of getting a penalty to go 2-0 up, we conceded a late penalty.”
