The weekend’s Betway Premiership action will be crucial for a whole hosts of clubs as they vie for the title, qualification for Africa and the MTN 8 or just plain survival.
The race for league honours is still very much on as Mamelodi Sundowns head to the Cape Town Stadium for a clash with embattled Cape Town City on the evening of Saturday, May 3.
Brazilians head coach Miguel Cardoso moved to ease any tensions with the club’s fans after his comments about the lack of support for his team at Loftus Versfeld against Al Ahly in the first leg of the CAF Champions League semi-finals.
Brazilians head coach Miguel Cardoso moved to ease any tensions with the club’s fans after his comments about the lack of support for his team at Loftus Versfeld against Al Ahly in the first leg of the CAF Champions League semi-finals.
“I made that mistake when I entered the pitch, it (the stadium) was not really full, but then it got full,” Cardoso said.
“Let me address that… it was clear that the stadium got full, or at least got very comfortable in terms of numbers. I made a mistake addressing that at the end (of the match against Al Ahly in Pretoria).
“Playing at Loftus with a lot of people and playing here (Cairo) with a lot of people… that’s what we truly love.”
The Citizens are facing the prospect of navigating the promotion/relegation playoffs after a 1-0 loss to Richards Bay on April 18 extended their winless run to 12 matches. City dropped down to 15th position on goal difference after SuperSport United drew 1-1 with Polokwane City on April 26.
Orlando Pirates will look to ramp up the pressure on the league leaders when they lock horns with Kaizer Chiefs in the 106th Soweto derby at the FNB Stadium on the afternoon of Saturday, May 3.
The Buccaneers are unbeaten in their the last four outings after they edged Rise And Shine 1-0 on April 5, while the Glamour Boys (9th) got knocked out of the top eight following a 2-1 defeat to Marumo Gallants on April 26 which left them winless in five games.
Later on in the evening, Sekhukhune United will attempt to firm their grip on third place when they face Magesi at the Seshego Stadium.
Eric Tinkler’s side are three points clear of Stellenbosch after being held to a 1-1 draw by TS Galaxy on April 27, although they have played one game more than the Maroons, who are in action against Chippa United on April 30.
Dikwena tsa Meetse have enjoyed a resurgence under Owen Da Gama and recorded a club-record fourth straight win in the top flight when they triumphed 2-1 against the Rockets on April 20 to climb up to 11th spot, five points clear of City.
Meanwhile, Stellenbosch will pour all their efforts into the league as they prepare to go up against Golden Arrows at the Mpumalanga Stadium.
The Cape Winelands outfit saw their maiden African adventure come to an end in the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals with a 1-0 aggregate defeat to Simba and Steve Barker has urged his players to finish the campaign strongly as they look to secure the final CAF berth.
“We need to get back, we have a big game on Wednesday in the league and so it’s important for us to refocus. We’ve got less than a month to turn the season into a special season,” Barker said.
“So if we can manage to again qualify for Confed, having made the MTN final, having made the [CAF Confederation Cup] semi-final, I think we can then look back at the season as being a really, really good season. But as I say, it’s still a lot of work to be done.”
Abafana Bes’thende are in danger of missing out on MTN 8 football for a second consecutive season after a 1-0 reverse to local rivals AmaZulu on April 26 left them four points outside the top eight in 12th place.
Elsewhere, AmaZulu (6th) and Polokwane City (7th) are set to do battle at the King Goodwill Zwelithini Stadium, SuperSport United (14th) host Chippa United (8th) at the Peter Mokaba Stadium and TS Galaxy (5th) entertain Richards Bay (13th) at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium.
